Scents Can Have Powerful Effect on Emotions

Looking for a peaceful, more balanced life? Just follow your nose! Although the term “aromatherapy” was not coined until the late 1920s, the roots of this widely used method of plant-based therapy spans thousands of years to the ancient Egyptians. Fast-forward to today, and aromatherapy remains popular as a holistic practice, using essential oils derived from various plants to enhance the physical, mental and spiritual health of the individual.

There are hundreds of essential oils used in aromatherapy; each oil has its own fragrance and medicinal properties, and is taken in and used by the body in a different way. The aroma sends a signal directly to the part of the brain that controls emotions, which is why essential oils have such a powerful effect on moods and general state of mind.

Different oils for different occasions

  • Lavender is used to promote sleep, reduce anxiety, treat headaches and reduce stress.

  • Sweet orange is used for relaxation, and to improve mood.

  • Mandarin reduces anxiety and promotes relaxation.

  • Lemon increases mental alertness and enhances focus and concentration.

  • Peppermint eases headaches, clears congestion, fights fatigue, helps improve concentration and is mentally stimulating.

  • Ginger is used to treat asthma, bloating, aching muscles and joints, depression, diarrhea, heartburn and nausea.

Rooted in holistic, integrative, patient-centered, methodologies, Kairos Chronic Pain Coaching is committed to providing evidence-based education and mind-body techniques that help chronic pain and illness sufferers let go of the life they exist in so they can successfully create a new life, worth living.
